Vipassana also known as insight Meditation is ancient, long pre-dating Gautama the Buddha, (who realized essential nature, while practicing this technique.)
The meditation is based on bringing awareness to the breath, simply observing the breath, keeping attention on the breath. Not controlling in any way, just observing, detached. When you notice that you are caught in thought, simply return your awareness to the breath. Then as we become rooted in observing the breath, we begin to add the other senses, smell, taste, touch, hearing and thinking. Allowing everything to be exactly as it is. A typical sitting is from 45min to 1 hour followed by a 20min walking meditation in which the awareness is focused on the walking.
One of the best ways of learning vipassana is to do a nine day retreat.
The retreat consists of being in silence for the nine days (although there may be a sharing session from time to time). One is encouraged to go inside. This time is dedicated to you and socializing with other participants is not encouraged.
The food is simple vegetarian, so as not to stimulate the physical body to much. An intensely deep experience and we highly recommend it.
Most of our Meditation days or weekends include some sessions of Vipassana
